After battling cancer, Robert W. Surber, MSSW, passed away at the age of 71 in Kailua, Hawaii during the early morning of June 27, 2016.

Driven by recognition that mental health issues impose an enormous disease burden on societies across the world, the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO) hosted a two-day series of events on April 13 and 14, 2016, during the World Bank International Monetary Fund Spring meetings in Washington D.C.

In the first trial of an intervention focused on increasing alcohol and drug treatment patients’ engagement in their own health care, researchers found that the patients who received the full course of intervention sessions had greater involvement in managing their health and health care, as well as higher abstinence rates and longer treatment retention.

Neuroscience researcher Lisa Gunaydin, PhD, has joined the Department of Psychiatry as an assistant professor in residence, along with a joint appointment at the UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. Her academic appointment begins today, May 16.

Last month, UCSF Professor of Psychiatry Peter M. Ferren, MD, MPH, made his eighth visit since 2007 to Vellore, India, where he serves as a volunteer clinical faculty member in the Christian Medical College (CMC)'s Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Unit.
