Applying to the Program

Applicants to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program must have completed, or be in their third year of an accredited general psychiatry program. Most applicants must provide documentation that they have completed, or will be able to complete, all requirements in training in general psychiatry.

Applicants who match with our program in Match 2024 must obtain a California medical license before July 1, 2024.

Applications to the UCSF Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program are ONLY accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

For Match 2024, please submit a completed application by October 1, 2023.

Our interviews will be held on the following dates. The interview day will include a virtual tour of our various training sites.

Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for child and adolescent psychiatry training programs. The deadline for training programs and applicants to submit their preference lists to the NRMP (rank order list deadline) is December 20, 2023.

If you are from outside the United States, please be sure to read the information below under the header "International Medical Graduate Requirements" before applying.

Application checklist

To complete our application process, all of the following materials must be completed and submitted through ERAS:

  • Medical/osteopathic school transcript
  • MSPE (dean's letter) from medical/osteopathic school
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • USMLE transcript: Passing Step 3 is required
  • Three letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be from a faculty psychiatrist who can comment directly on your career development, including your interest in working with children, adolescents and families
  • Completion of all 3 CSV exams at time of application is preferred but not required
     

International medical graduate requirements

The UCSF School of Medicine requires that all international medical school applicants:

  • Be a citizen or hold permanent resident status or qualify for a J-1 Visa.
  • Possess a valid ECFMG certificate.
  • Register with the National Resident Matching Program.
     

If you are not a citizen of the United States, and you do not hold Permanent Resident status, you will be required to secure the ECFMG-J1 visa before you can join UCSF for postgraduate medical training.

UCSF does not sponsor H-1 visas for medical trainees.

Compliance with the above requirements must be met, without exception, before your application can be considered.
