Neuroscientist Rachel Nosheny joins department faculty

Staff reports

Research neuroscientist Rachel Nosheny, PhD, has joined the UC San Francisco Department of Psychiatry faculty as an assistant adjunct professor, effective Feb 1., 2018.

Nosheny is a neuroscientist with over 10 years of research experience in molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, including studies of Alzheimer’s disease, Down syndrome, and AIDS dementia complex. Her areas of expertise are synaptic biology and neurotrophic factor signaling, and she has previously been awarded research fellowships from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, John Adler Foundation, and Larry L. Hillblom Foundation.

After receiving her PhD in Neuroscience from Georgetown University, Nosheny completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, where she identified important synaptic and intercellular signaling abnormalities in mouse models of Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2012, she joined the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIND), where her research efforts focused on identifying associations between longitudinal brain changes and other Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers as part of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). For the past three years, she has been involved in the development of the Brain Health Registry, an internet-based registry aimed at accelerating development of new treatments for all brain diseases by facilitating clinical trials. Together with colleague Michael Weiner, MD, Nosheny created the Virtual Repository of Alzheimer’s Disease Biofluids, an online database designed to accelerate the identification of blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease by facilitating access to large cohorts of biofluids samples.

About UCSF Psychiatry

Together they constitute one of the largest departments in the UCSF School of Medicine and the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, with a mission focused on research (basic, translational, clinical), teaching, patient care and public service.

UCSF Psychiatry conducts its clinical, educational and research efforts at a variety of locations in Northern California, including UCSF campuses at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay and Laurel Heights, UCSF Medical Center, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, the San Francisco VA Health Care System and UCSF Fresno.

About the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences

The UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, established by the extraordinary generosity of Joan and Sanford I. "Sandy" Weill, brings together world-class researchers with top-ranked physicians to solve some of the most complex challenges in the human brain.

The UCSF Weill Institute leverages UCSF’s unrivaled bench-to-bedside excellence in the neurosciences. It unites three UCSF departments—Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurological Surgery—that are highly esteemed for both patient care and research, as well as the Neuroscience Graduate Program, a cross-disciplinary alliance of nearly 100 UCSF faculty members from 15 basic-science departments, as well as the UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, a multidisciplinary research center focused on finding effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders.
