UCSF ranked among top in the nation for psychiatric care by U.S. News & World Report

The UCSF Department of Psychiatry has been ranked the 12th best center for adult psychiatry in the country in the 2015-2016 America’s Best Hospitals survey from U.S. News & World Report. It is the only psychiatric department in Northern California included in the top echelon.

This marks the first time that UCSF Psychiatry has been included in the specialty rankings since 2010, when it was ranked 23rd among all institutions. Since then, UCSF Psychiatry has been noted for high performance. U.S. News’ 2015 rankings were calculated based on ratings by psychiatric specialists across the country over the past three years.

Overall, UCSF was ranked as the 8th best hospital in the nation and earned top-tier status in 14 out of 16 adult medical specialties. It was one of only 15 hospitals listed on the U.S. News Honor Roll which highlights hospitals that are exceptional in numerous medical specialties. Additionally, it was ranked No. 1 in the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area. U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across the country.

“We are very proud of the work carried out every day at UCSF Medical Center by our health care practitioners. Their dedication and commitment to excellence exemplify UCSF’s core values, and are the frontline of UCSF’s mission of advancing health locally and worldwide through excellence in education, research and patient care,” said UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS.

About U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings

U.S. News‘ annual rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating patients who need an especially high level of care. The 13 hospitals ranked in adult psychiatry this year were named among the best for difficult cases and procedures by at least 5 percent of the psychiatric specialists who responded to U.S. News surveys in 2013, 2014 and 2015. U.S. News does not currently issue rankings for child and adolescent psychiatry.

The 2015 rankings were published online on July 21 and are available for free at health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/psychiatry.

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in North Carolina.
