Tran named an APA/SAMHSA Fellow

Second-year psychiatry resident David Tran, MD, MPP, has been selected to receive a 2015-2016 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Recipients of the one-year academic fellowship are chosen by a committee based on their commitment to serve ethnic minority populations, their awareness of the importance of culture in mental health, their interest in the interrelationship between mental health/illness and transcultural factors, and their leadership abilities.

For more than 40 years, the APA/SAMHSA Minority Fellowships Program has aimed to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in mental health and substance abuse care. The goal of the program is to provide educational enrichment to psychiatrists-in-training and to stimulate interest in providing quality and effective services in areas of psychiatry where minority groups are underrepresented. These areas may include research, teaching, addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and child psychiatry.
