He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his psychiatry residency at UCLA, as well as a postdoctoral research fellowship at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Prior to joining UCSF, Jain served on the faculty of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, as an attending psychiatrist for the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center’s Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team, and maintained a private practice in Los Angeles.
Jain's research work has focused on the development of a mindfulness and guided imagery intervention to help promote stress reduction and mentalization in complex interpersonal situations. He has coupled his clinical trials with psychophysiology investigations, including studies of the autonomic nervous system with heart rate variability, and more recently structural and functional neuroimaging.
