Association between schizophrenia symptoms and neurocognition on mobility in older adults with schizophrenia

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:22pm
Older persons with schizophrenia develop problems associated with aging, such as poor mobility, at more rapid rates than people without serious mental illness. Decrements in mobility contribute to poor health outcomes. Impaired neurocognitive function and psychiatric symptoms are central aspects of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between neurocognitive impairment and schizophrenia symptoms to mobility in older adults with schizophrenia.

Change in inflammatory markers and cognitive status in the oldest-old women from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:21pm
To determine the association between interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-6 soluble receptor (sR), and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (sTNF-R1) and cognitive status in the oldest-old women.

Retromer mediates a discrete route of local membrane delivery to dendrites

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:20pm
A fundamental and still largely unresolved question is how neurons achieve rapid delivery of selected signaling receptors throughout the elaborate dendritic arbor. Here we show that this requires a conserved sorting machinery called retromer.

The emergency department social work intervention for mild traumatic brain injury (SWIFT-Acute): a pilot study

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:19pm
To determine acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of Emergency Department (ED) Social Work Intervention for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (SWIFT-Acute) on alcohol use, community functioning, depression, anxiety, post-concussive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder and service use.

Neuroimaging correlates of handwriting quality as children learn to read and write

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:17pm
Reading and writing are related but separable processes that are crucial skills to possess in modern society. The neurobiological basis of reading acquisition and development, which critically depends on phonological processing, and to a lesser degree, beginning writing as it relates to letter perception, are increasingly being understood.

Development of clinical practice guidelines

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:16pm
Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are intended to improve mental, behavioral, and physical health by promoting clinical practices that are based on the best available evidence. The American Psychological Association (APA) is committed to generating patient-focused CPGs that are scientifically sound, clinically useful, and informative for psychologists, other health professionals, training programs, policy makers, and the public.

Distinguishing between schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:16pm
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has provided diagnostic reliability across observers while neglecting biological validity. The current theme issue explores the boundaries between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, using neuro-cognition, systems neuroscience, and genetics as points of departure to begin consideration of a biologically based reclassification of these illnesses.

The associations between serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor, potential confounders, and cognitive decline: a longitudinal study

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:15pm
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a role in the maintenance and function of neurons. Although persons with Alzheimer's disease have lower cortical levels of BDNF, evidence regarding the association between circulating BDNF and cognitive function is conflicting. We sought to determine the correlates of BDNF level and whether BDNF level was prospectively associated with cognitive decline in healthy older adults.

GPCR signaling along the endocytic pathway

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:14pm
Many G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) internalize after agonist-induced activation. While endocytosis has long been associated with homeostatic attenuation of cellular responsiveness, accumulating evidence from study of a wide range of eukaryotes reveals that the endocytic pathway also contributes to generating receptor-initiated signals themselves. Here we review recent progress in this area, discussing primarily but not exclusively GPCR signaling in mammalian cells.

Association of age at depression onset with cognitive functioning in individuals with late-life depression and executive dysfunction

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:14pm
To compare patterns of cognitive performance in older adults with late-onset depression (LOD; ≥65 years of age) with that of older adults with early-onset depression (EOD; <65 years).

Early adult to midlife cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive function

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:13pm
Studies have linked midlife and late-life cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) to cognitive function, yet little is known about CVRF exposure in early adulthood and subsequent cognitive function. In addition, most studies rely on single assessments of CVRFs, which may not accurately reflect long-term exposure. We sought to determine the association between cumulative exposure to CVRFs from early to middle adulthood and cognitive function at midlife.

Psychiatric Disorders: Diagnosis to Therapy

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:11pm
Recent findings in genetics and genomics, neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, and pharmacology are presenting an accelerating array of challenges to the conventional wisdom regarding the etiology, classification, and treatment of psychiatric conditions and forcing a reappraisal of research methods and approaches.

Substance use and drinking outcomes in Personalized Cognitive Counseling randomized trial for episodic substance-using men who have sex with men

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:10pm
Non-dependent alcohol and substance use patterns are prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM), yet few effective interventions to reduce their substance use are available for these men. We evaluated whether an adapted brief counseling intervention aimed at reducing HIV risk behavior was associated with secondary benefits of reducing substance use among episodic substance-using MSM (SUMSM).

Modafinil augments oscillatory power in middle frequencies during rule selection

Test 3 March 29, 2016 - 2:08pm
Control-related cognitive processes are associated with cortical oscillations and modulated by catecholamine neurotransmitters. It remains unclear how catecholamine systems modulate control-related oscillations. We tested modafinil effects on rule-related 4-30 Hz oscillations, with double-blind, placebo-controlled (within-subjects) testing of 22 healthy adults, using EEG during cognitive control task performance.
