The Metcalf Prize is awarded annually by NC-ROCAP in honor of the late Aubrey Metcalf, MD, to further his interest in supporting all aspects of child psychiatry (with particular emphasis upon training and psychodynamic thinking applied to working with children). A veteran of the Korean War, Metcalf completed medical school and residencies in psychiatry and child psychiatry at UCSF, then became a lifelong faculty member and clinician at LPPI. He wrote prodigiously on topics ranging from autism to day care to teen sexuality, as well as family dynamics and psychological development in childhood. He was renowned as a dedicated educator and mentor, and early champion of attachment theory in psychoanalysis. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 76.
