Kaup brings neuropsychological expertise to department faculty ranks

Neuropsychologist Allison Kaup, PhD, has joined the Department of Psychiatry faculty as an Assistant Professor, as well as as a clinical research psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. Kaup received her PhD in clinical psychology from San Diego State University/UC San Diego and has spent the past three years as a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Kristine Yaffe, MD.

Kaup's research work focuses on neural correlates of cognitive aging and the role of cognitive reserve in protecting against cognitive decline, particularly in older adults who are at high risk for dementia. She is currently also investigating mobile cognitive training as a potential means to enhance cognitive reserve. She recently received funding through a VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Service Career Development Award for her project, "Cognitive Reserve and Training in Older Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury," and was selected as a UCSF Catalyst Award recipient last fall for her work on developing user testing for a "Mobile Senior Center" application to promote cognitive health in older adults. Her postdoctoral research efforts also earned her a departmental Trainee Research Award, and will be highlighted at Grand Rounds on June 2.
