Longtime UC San Francisco music and rehabilitation therapist Tom Benson, MT-BC, has been chosen by the Western Region chapter of the American Music Therapy Association (WRAMTA) as the recipient of its 2018 Betty Isern Howery Award in recognition of his work and impact on his patients. He formally received the honor during the chapter's annual meeting last week in Ontario, Calif.

Bestowed annually since 1991, the award is WRAMTA's highest honor and is given to those embodying the qualities and values demonstrated by pioneering music therapist and namesake Betty Howery. Honorees are recognized for the quality of their relationships with patients and colleagues, their professional commitment, their vision for the field and practice of music therapy, and their ability to take risks in service of the greater good.

Benson, who also directs the UCSF Music Therapy Clinical Training Program, is celebrating his 25th year of service at Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital.
