Longtime faculty member John Sikorski, MD, was honored earlier this week as the inaugural recipient of the UC San Francisco Department of Psychiatry's Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. He was chosen by the department's Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program fellows.

Sikorski, who completed his own child psychiatry residency at the then-Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute, has been a faculty member in the department since 1971.

"I knew every one of those people on the wall personally," he told the audience while pointing to the portraits of former department chairs lining the Langley Porter Auditorium, "so it's a real pleasure to have that survival capability and still be so relevant and loved."

In his time at UCSF, he has worked with hundreds of child and adolescent psychiatry fellows as an educator and clinical supervisor. Throughout his career he has been involved with numerous academic and community mental health organizations, including the International Association for Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Northern California Psychiatric Society, San Francisco Medical Society, and the San Francisco Mental Health Advisory Board.

In 2006, he received the J. Elliot Royer Award in Community Psychiatry in recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of psychiatry.
