On Sunday, September 25, runners will line up along San Francisco's picturesque Crissy Field and take part in a five-kilometer race that's about more than just bragging rights for the winner—it's also about combating the social stigma that often surrounds mental health issues.

Palo Alto-based nonprofit Subconscious is sponsoring the 5K walk/run, its first public outreach event since being formed earlier this year. The organization was created by a team of Bay Area young professionals with a desire to change the public conversation about mental health issues, and power awareness and education for those with mental health disorders, those caring for their affected loved ones, and the next generation of millennials.

A portion of the proceeds from the Race Against Stigma 5K will also be donated to fund mental health research at the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. The exact amount will be announced following the race's conclusion.

Participants will receive a t-shirt and sports bag, along with health snacks and an opportunity to take photos after the race. Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to take part. Tickets for the event are now on sale online, and a limited number of walk-up spaces will be available on the day of the event.
