UCSF Health Vice President for Adult Behavioral Health Services and UCSF Department of Psychiatry Vice Chair for Adult Psychiatry Maga Jackson-Triche, MD, MSHS, announced today that Michael Marcin, MD, MSCR, has been selected to become the new Medical Director for Adult Outpatient Services at Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital (LPPH) following an exhaustive national search process. He will officially begin his appointment on July 1, 2018.
In this newly created position, Marcin will provide leadership, guidance, and clinical oversight to LPPH’s various adult outpatient programs – including its specialty clinics, continuing care clinics, group therapy services, and Electroconvulsive Therapy Program – while continuing to provide direct patient care. As an educator with more than a decade of experience in teaching and mentoring, he will also work with UCSF training directors in psychiatry and other disciplines to develop and implement innovative clinical curricula involving mental health delivery.
Marcin is a graduate of the University of Florida and received his medical degree from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed a master’s degree in clinical research and residencies in general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry at Emory University, followed by fellowships with the American Psychoanalytic Association and Yale University’s Psychoanalytic Research Training Program. He is currently in the final year of a three-year fellowship with the Academy of Communication in Healthcare’s Faculty-in-Training (FIT) Program.
Throughout his career, Marcin has held a variety of clinical leadership roles across a wide range of service environments with diverse patient populations. Following three years as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Children’s Farm Home in Corvallis, Oregon, he co-founded and operated a network of successful youth-focused therapy centers in Oregon before moving to the Bay Area to serve as the medical director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s O.M.I. Family Center for three years.
In 2015, Marcin joined UCSF as a clinical professor of psychiatry and assistant medical director of the LPPH Adult Inpatient Program (AIP), where he has become an integral part of the clinical leadership team and a key figure in the hospital’s quality improvement efforts. Among his important contributions has been the creation of the LPPH Patient Experience Team and the AIP Patient Experience team, both dedicated to improving patient experiences and outcomes through continuous process analysis and transformation. In addition to his work at UCSF, Marcin is also a faculty member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists’ Quality Training Program, where he works with oncologist quality improvement teams on effective team development and communications skills.
“Michael’s work with our Adult Inpatient Program over the past three years has been crucial in our efforts to focus on the patient experience,” said Jackson-Triche. “I am excited that we will be able to utilize his enthusiasm and expertise in education, research, and clinical care to help refine and enhance our outpatient operations as well.”
Marcin is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the Northern California Regional Organization of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Academy on Communications in Healthcare. He has received numerous plaudits for his work, including the AACAP Presidential Scholars Award (2004), Skobba Memorial Award (2005), Elaine Schlosser Lewis ADHD Pilot Research Award (2003), National Institute on Drug Abuse Research Scholars Award (2004), American Psychiatric Association/Lilly Resident Research Award (2005), and multiple teaching awards from UCSF and Emory University.
