Message from Dean Hawgood:
Dear Department of Psychiatry Colleagues: After more than three years of providing excellent leadership for the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Renee Binder has decided to step down from the position of Interim Chair of Psychiatry, effective September 19th. She will continue as Director of the Psychiatry and Law Program and as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the School of Medicine. I would like to thank Dr. Binder for her outstanding leadership of the Department of Psychiatry for over three years. Her major accomplishments include: revitalizing the Child Psychiatry Division, recruiting outstanding faculty, developing research collaboration groups, reorganizing Langley Porter Outpatient Services into specialty clinics, bringing in over 11 million dollars in gifts for the Department, and overseeing the rise of the Department’s NIH ranking into the top 10. I have asked Dr. Lowell Tong to serve as Interim Chair, effective September 19th. Lowell has served in a number of leadership positions in the School and Department including his current role as the department’s Associate Chair for Education. I am confident he will provide strong and effective leadership. Please join me in thanking Renee for her outstanding service to the Department and the School, and welcoming Lowell to his new role. The search for a permanent chair will be reopened. I would like to thank the original search committee ably led by Dr. Linda Giudice for its outstanding work. I will be appointing a new committee chaired by Dr. Stephen Hauser for the next phase of the search. I will meet with the Department’s leadership in the very near future to discuss these next steps. If you have questions or suggestions for candidates who should be considered please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Sam Hawgood |
