William Byerley, MD has been recommended for a NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award grant for 2011.  The project is titled, “Whole genome sequencing of multiplex schizophrenia pedigrees from an isolated population.”
Susan Meffert, Susan, MDMeffert
Susan Meffert, MD has been offered a BIRCWH K12 scholarship starting around July 2011.  The aims for her project are to investigate the relationship between violence and HIV risk behaviors among women and test an adapted mental health intervention to treat PTSD and depression among HIV-positive women in Kenya.  BIRCWH is an NIH-funded K12 program that supports career development for translational and clinical researchers in a wide variety of disciplines addressing issues in women's health.

Janice Tsoh, PhD received an R21 from NIDA titled, "A family intervention to reduce smoking among Chinese and Vietnamese men," to begin on March 1, 2011.  Co-investigators include Tung Nguyen, MD and Steve McPhee, MD of the Division of General Internal Medicine, and Nancy Burke, PhD of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nancy Adler, PhD has won the Newman-Proshansky Award from Division 34 (Population and Environmental Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.  This is the Division's professional achievement award.
Marie CaffeyCaffeyMarie Caffey, Associate Chair of Administration and Finance, will be honored with the prestigious “Chancellor’s Award for Exceptional University Management.”  This award is in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments, both department- and campus-wide, particularly her significant leadership during this past year with the Operational Excellence (OE) initiative.  Marie is widely respected for the incredible strength and collaboration she is providing to achieving a thoughtful OE campuswide reorganization of essential operational and financial functions.  Throughout her tenure, she has been willing to spearhead effective, creative, and innovative responses to change.  And without her legendary energy and remarkable skill, UCSF Psychiatry would not enjoy the same level of national recognition for comprehensive patient care, pioneering research, and excellence in professional training and education.
Miriam Martinez, PhDMartinezMiriam Martinez, PhD announced that she will be leaving UCSF on April 15 to assume a position as Chief of Strategic Initiatives for the Department of Psychiatry at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City with a teaching appointment at Columbia.  She will be leaving a tremendous legacy of having served as the first Director of the Division of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychiatry at SFGH for nine years, established the Child and Adolescent Services at SFGH, founded an APA accredited predoctoral Multicultural Clinical Training Program, and most recently, served as Associate Director at the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, led its School-Based Youth Programs.

Goldyne, MD has been chosen to receive the 2010-11 Kaiser Award for Excellence by Volunteer Clinical Faculty at the School of Medicine Convocation on May 12, 2011.  Nominations for this prestigious award can only be made by students and residents or housestaff.  “It is satisfying to see that the gift you give to our students through excellent teaching is recognized and rewarded by them,” says Drs. Hawgood, Irby, and Topp.

James Reich, MDReichJames Reich, MD will chair the symposium entitled “Clinical impressions of the DSM V Personality Disorders,” at the American Psychiatric Association Annual meeting in Hawaii May 15, 2011.
