James Dilley, MD to present on HIV Prevention Science in Russia
Tuesday, July 14, 2009
James Dilley, MD, was invited by the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being (Rospotrebnadzor), to present in a United States−Russia Workshop on HIV Prevention Science.
The meeting will be held within the framework of the 3rd Eastern Europe and Central Asia AIDS Conference (EECAAC 2009), to be held on October 28-30, 2009 in Moscow, Russian Federation. Additional information on EECAAC 2009 is located on the EECAAC website at http://www.eecaac.org/en/index.phtml
The overall aim of the Workshop is to develop recommendations to guide and strengthen future U.S.-Russian collaborations on HIV/AIDS prevention research. The Workshop’s specific goals are to:
o Exchange information on the “state of the science” and recent advances in the Russian Federation and the United States in four scientific priority areas of AIDS research: basic science of HIV, vaccines, microbicides, and behavioral and social science;
o Continue to develop a research agenda, with a particular emphasis on engaging junior and early-career scientists in both countries and the EECA region; and
o Identify scientific gaps, opportunities, and potential partnerships for collaboration in HIV prevention research that address this agenda, taking into account the unique expertise and available cohorts for study in Russia and the EECA region.
The Workshop is expected to bring together over 250 scientists and experts engaged in HIV/AIDS research – representing laboratory and clinical research institutions, academia, government and multilateral health agencies, and the non-government sector. A combination of plenary lectures, focused breakout sessions, and cross-cutting bridging and panel discussions will provide an interactive forum, intended to encourage a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to address the targeted issues.
