Wednesday, July 01, 2009
Dear Colleagues and Friends:
I am delighted to announce Margaret Paternek's appointment as the new Director of Administration for SFGH Department of Psychiatry.
Margaret brings with her a rich background of management, financial and strategic planning skills in academic medicine and health care administration. Most recently serving as the division administrator for Prevention Science and deputy director of the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies at UCSF, she is an accomplished director and well versed in the complexity of issues and interests in a variety of academic, administrative and community settings.

Margaret says she is looking forward to the opportunity to return to an environment where she may contribute to innovative medical training programs, the improvement of clinical service delivery, and the development of community-based programs. She has an established record of organizational innovation and leadership, and has excelled in different roles in several highly complex academic medical center organizations over the course of her career.
Margaret completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in political economy, specializing in political theory and public policy. She has held a number of leadership roles in educational, public health/public sector services, and health care policy since that time. Prior to her recruitment to UCSF, Margaret served as the founding director of the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where, among her many accomplishments, she successfully developed and implemented the first-of-its-kind residency program in Global Health Equity and Internal Medicine. Before that, she joined Partners HealthCare Services as the director of Managed Care Contracting and Program Development at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, where she represented the integrated delivery system in negotiations with Medicaid, Blue Cross, and other third-party payors and provided programmatic leadership and organizational and fiscal oversight.
Taking on this new role, Margaret brings a collaborative leadership style and strong vision of management to promote the outstanding staff and faculty and the clinical, educational, research and public service missions of Departments of Psychiatry at SFGH and UCSF. Please join me in welcoming Margaret to our Department.
Sincerely,
James Dilley, MD
