UCSF Autism and Neurodevelopment Program
Our Mission:
The UCSF Autism and Neurodevelopment Program (ANP) combines clinical excellence with innovative research. We provide services and resources for individuals with autism and related neuro-developmental disorders.
Our Clinic:
The Autism Clinic teams provide diagnostic assessment and individualized behavior, education, and medication plans for each patient. Based on a child’s needs, we select one or more clinical teams to formulate comprehensive recommendations derived from a detailed family history, cognitive and play- based assessments, and neurological and genetic evaluations. The Autism Clinic provides care to all ages. We have a special focus on helping families of young children to understand the diagnosis of autism and obtain intervention services. The Autism Clinic collaborates with schools and regional centers in California and around the US.
Our Research:
Our clinical services reflect the work of research scientists who translate imaging, genetic, neuropsychological, and behavioral research. ANP researchers are actively investigating the causes of and treatments for autism and related disorders. The clinic serves as a base for research on diagnostic classification and epidemiology, treatment responder characteristics, autistic learning styles, and parenting efficacy. The clinic collaborates in research on the neurophysiology of autism via brain imaging, genomic studies, and psycho-physiological measurement. ANP supports studies of new medications, nutritional interventions, and other newly available treatments.
Services
- Comprehensive, multidisciplinary, integrated evaluation
- Individualized treatment planning
- Educational and behavioral consultation
- Medical and psychopharmacologic interventions
- Training for autism professionals and parents
Visits to the Autism Clinic:
Visits to the clinic are tailored for each patient and their family based on needed services. Assessment may require 1, 2, or 3 visits of different lengths: As needed, each assessment will be assigned to one or more clinical teams who will:
- Review current concerns, past assessments, and treatments
- Detail a developmental history from first concerns to the present
- Conduct neuropsychological, psychiatric, and other autism-specific assessments
Depending on the family’s needs, each of these activities may take a full visit or be consolidated. At the completion of assessment, families meet with the clinic team leaders who have participated in their child’s assessment. Together, they review diagnostic assessment and receive specific recommendations for treatments.
