This year’s symposium will highlight some of the most exciting developments in understanding and treating depressive disorders. Dr. Helen Mayberg, from Emory University, will present the latest findings on depression circuits in the brain. Her pioneering work on Deep Brain Stimulation in these circuits has revolutionized our understanding of this area. Deep Brain Stimulation is being applied to a widening group of disorders. Dr. Ian Gotlib, from Stanford University, continues the discussion by shedding light on psychological and biological factors increasing the risk for depression. His work on utilizing fMRI to train individuals to activate key areas of the depression circuitry offers groundbreaking possibilities for future treatment. Dr. Owen Wolkowitz, from the UCSF Depression Center, discusses the latest findings of the neurobiology of depression. His innovative research highlights new theories of how stress affects biology and in turn, acts on everything from mood states to cellular aging.
