January 2015 Department Update: Psychology Training

Did you know that new initiatives in clinical psychology training are taking place at San Francisco General Hospital, Langley Porter, and the San Francisco VA Medical Center? The following is a summary of recent, exciting developments compiled by Vice Chair for Psychology Stephen Hinshaw, PhD.

SFGH programs

The three existing training programs for doctoral-level psychologists consist of two infant and early childhood programs—the Child Trauma Research Program (CTRP) and the Infant-Parent Program (IPP), both of which serve children birth to six years of age—and a third program, Child and Adolescent Services (CAS), serving children primarily six to eighteen years of age. Starting this past September, they have been consolidated into a single training program, the Multicultural Child Trauma Center (CTC). Trainees now jointly attend three integrated seminars: a multicultural seminar, a developmental psychopathology seminar, and an assessment seminar. In addition, an explicit attempt is now underway to have the American Psychological Association extend its current accreditation of CAS to both the CTRP and IPP programs. Director: Betsy Wolfe, PhD.

Clinical Psychology Training Program (CPTP)

This long-accredited program was one of the first in the nation to adopt a two-year, predoctoral-plus-postdoctoral program. It has been the source of many current national leaders in research-oriented clinical psychology, with a strong focus on minority mental health. Recently, however, it was nearing the end of its "run," given the severe fiscal problems faced by the department.

Yet with generous new support from both the department as well as a donor, it is now thriving with trainees placed at both Langley Porter and San Francisco General Hospital. A new feature, to begin in 2015, is the provision for up to two half-time training slots per year for UC Berkeley doctoral students in clinical science, who will be able to keep up with their existing research programs at UC Berkeley while embarking in mentored clinical experiences at UCSF.

Funds are presently being sought for permanently endowing this entire program. Director: Dale McNeil, PhD. Associate Directors: Patricia Areán, PhD; Alicia Lieberman, PhD; James Sorensen, PhD.

SFVAMC psychology training

Recent developments at the VA include an infusion of resources to bolster its entire psychology research enterprise, including plans for attracting trainees during their graduate careers for two years of postdoctoral support subsequent to the predoctoral internship. For its APA-accredited training program, which follows the scientist-practitioner model, the VA is therefore renewing its commitment to produce the next generation of research-oriented psychology leaders. Director: Kellie Rollins, PsyD.
