Brain, Biology & Mood Study
Description
We are studying the relationship between depression, biological markers of stress, and brain structure in depressed adults. We are also investigating how treatment with the antidepressant drug sertraline (Zoloft®) affects the biology of stress and depression.
Study Design
Interested participants will first complete an eligibility screening interview and brief physical examination. Those eligible to participate will then come to UCSF for a blood draw, mood and memory ratings, and a brain MRI scan. Participants will also collect an overnight urine sample and 3 days of saliva samples. After completing the first visit, participants will take the approved antidepressant drug sertraline (Zoloft®) for 12 weeks. No placebos will be used, so all participants will know they are receiving active medication. Participants will then have 3 study visits (approx. 4-5 hours each) plus additional brief clinic visits over a 12-week period. Treatment will be supervised by UCSF faculty psychiatrists, and clinical recommendations will be provided at the end of the study.
Participant Requirements
We are currently seeking depressed men and women (ages 18-50) who are medically healthy and off all psychiatric medications for at least 6 weeks before starting. Participants must not have been dependent on substances in the past 6 months and must not have bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder) or post-traumatic stress disorder. Women participants must not be pregnant.
Payment
$600 for 4 visits; prorated if participant withdraws from the study early.
