Neurosteroids and Acute Alcohol Intoxication in Women

Description

We are studying the short-term effects of alcohol in women and what happens in the body and in the brain after one drinks alcohol. We are also investigating the effects of pregnenolone, a hormone present in blood and currently sold over the counter as a nutritional supplement.

Study Design

We will be measuring chemicals called neurosteroids through the use of a device similar to an IV, conducting sobriety tests, memory tests, and assessing mood throughout each study visit. Study involves 5 visits (not including the 1 screening visit), which are spread out over several months during the first 11 days of the menstrual cycle. The visits must occur Monday, Thursday or Friday between either 7:00 am – 12:45 pm OR 7:15 am – 1:10 pm. Lunch is provided afterwards at no cost and subjects must be there the entire time.

Subjects must abstain from alcohol for 7 days prior to each test visit, and abstain from psychotropic drugs use for 2 weeks prior to each test visit.

Payment

$500 for 5 visits, or $75 per visit if subject withdraws from the study early.
